In May of 2002, after a lifetime on Long Island, we moved to the Berkshires. It was on an impulse, really, because we happened to fall deeply and unexpectedly in love with the first place the real estate agent showed us. What sold us on our condo initially was its stunning view of the woods (hence this blog’s title).
A goodly portion of Loved Ones thought we’d gone crazy. Such a sudden decision! Out of nowhere! “But you are not country people,” exclaimed a horrified Catalan friend. But in fact we loved country living, and spent wonderful years in the Berkshires, until recently we sensed it was time for a change.
So now here we are in a bigger small town in the Pioneer Valley, just over the mountains an hour east from the Berkshires. No less than five colleges grace the Valley: Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst, Hampshire, and UMass at Amherst. It’s a little warmer, a lot more fertile, a lot more diverse (all those students from everywhere).
But our unit in the retirement village we’ve chosen still offers us — a View From the Woods. So here we are, the same, yet different, looking still toward the future. Onward!
