Artichokes are actually nothing BUT curves!

Artichokes are irresistible to me. They have a secret heart awaiting the bold adventurer who dares their curves and sharply pointed leaves. First each sharp point must be scissored blunt. Then, to steam the artichoke. When a testing fork easily pierces the upturned heart, I’m ready to begin operations. Leaf by leaf I advance, dipping the tip of each into melted butter or aioli as I go, scraping the tip against my teeth, until I reach the final obstacle, the fuzzy choke. Once the choke is cleared away, I claim the reward: more butter or aioli for each bite of the heart, which tastes utterly unlike anything else in the vegetable kingdom. It tastes sublimely of  — what shall I say? Of GREEN.

Does anyone else out there like artichokes?

    Great post for the theme. I love artichokes but have never cooked them. Wouldn’t know where to start!!

      It’s a lot of work, as Mrs. Carmichael says, but it’s just the kind of detail stuff I love to do. I enjoy the anticipation also —
      What you do is cut off the base so it’s even, cut off the top 1/4 of the artichoke straight across (careful, use strength), then scissor off the sharp tips of the leaves so they’re flat. That’s what I like doing best.
      You steam them upside down covered with lemon wedge, peeled garlic clove, a bay leaf and a few peppercorns if you’re so inclined. If not, not. Steam till done — about 35-45 mins for average side, or till a sharp knife or a fork pierces the base easily.
      Serve hot with melted butter or cold with simple “aoli” wannabe of mayo, minced garlic, a Tb of water and some parmesan cheese.
      Yeah, I guess it is a lot of work! But what a delicious sense of accomplishment 😉

    I like almost all foods but the three As – artichokes, avocados and anchovies. Oddly enough, my favorite color is green…

      I love artichokes and avocados and anchovies and asparagus, for good measure!
      I’ll have to remember not to serve them to you if we are ever in the same 3-D space again!!!!

        Well now, asparagus is one of my favorite green things. I’m also fond of apples and almonds and apricots but draw a line at abalone and aspic of any sort 😉

        Agreed. We’ll abrogate the asparagus and the aspic!!!!
        (AAAAGH — I love asparagus. I meant, we’ll abrogate the ABALONE and the aspic!)

  5. I tried to cook an artichoke once and ended up with a little stubby thing and a couple leaves. Someday maybe I will figure it out, because your photo and description are DELICIOUS!

  7. I knew a four year kid, a boy who told me his favorite food was artichokes. That blew me away. Next came sushi. He was pretty cool. Like your post. 🙂

  8. I’ve seen these but never had the courage to try them. They always seem like hard work and I wouldn’t even know where to begin! But your description sounds delicious especially claiming that last part – now I just might pick some up the next time I see them 🙂

      I’m sure that somewhere on line there will be detailed instructions on how to prep, cook, and eat artichokes.
      They don’t taste like anything else, and if you like them, you REALLY like them.
