Weekly Photo Challenge: CHANGING SEASONS

Do you think the saying is true, the more it changes, the more it stays the same? I do, at least in the basics. New England remains rock-ribb’d, as here, same garden, same rocks, different seasons:

Summer

And Winter

Rock-ribb'd New England

No more greens, no more flowers, only the gray of the rocks in winter, and sometimes — as it was that afternoon — the blue of the snow.

  1. pauline says:

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose – an epigram by Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr – that literally translates into, “The more it changes, the more it’s the same thing.” Isn’t it pretty in French? And yes, I think that changes on the surface reinforce the immutability of the object. Just look at those rocks; though their outer shapes may change, on a deeper, unseen level, they are still rocks.

    • Touch2Touch says:

Frank and I just wrestled with the choice of photos, because in fact those ARE the same rocks. They just look totally different. Now if only I’d taken them from the same angle and the same perspective the epigram would have shown up more clearly —-
(I didn’t know some one person had actually said that in French, just thought it was an on dit — you know all, Madame.)

      • pauline says:

I didn’t mean the rocks in your photos looked different on the outside – I could tell they were the same rocks in both pics – what I should have said is that though they look the same to us year after year, there are minute changes we are unaware of. Even so, they remain rocks. (Not sure that’s better but do you see what I’m getting at?)

      • Touch2Touch says:

I think I do — you mean even the rocks actually are changing even though they appear so solid to us.
I can accept that, but they still seem unchanging compared to everything about us which is so volatile — including ourselves!
(Lily can’t possibly be growing and changing as fast as she seems to be, for example!)

That is such a great post for the theme. I got a bit lost with mine! They are both beautiful in their own way!

the bottom photo is stark and lovely.

  4. Gemma says:

I miss the green, but the blue of snow is so cool as well. Excuse the pun. 🙂
The more I try to change, the more I stay the same. Ugh!

  5. Stef says:

If I didn’t know better, I would swear those were two completely different locations.

    • Touch2Touch says:

When I was taking the summer picture, I forgot that perspective and angle make a difference even though the location is exactly the same— a ledge at the top of the driveway of the woman who used to cut my hair in the Berkshires.

  6. Love the French interpretation from Pauline: Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. So very true…
