Weekly Photo Capture: BETWEEN, 1

In Tucson, at La Encantada, the enchanted shopping plaza, there is this staircase up from the ground level to the second level. (Or, of course, down from the second level to the ground!)

And it occurs to me that ALL staircases, by definition, are places of “being between” — When you set foot on the first step, you leave behind where you were — but you won’t arrive at where you will be until you take that final step off the staircase, into the new.

An inbetween place, a place of freedom? Of changing identity? Of liberation? Like, maybe, the place between breaths in Zen?

I find the “between” is a really speculative idea —- Does it resonate at all for you too?

You’re dead right about staircases being places of in between but I never thought of them that way before! I like this colourful staircase in your pic.

An outdoor staircase in a place with beautiful weather — nice.
Thanks for the comment and the visit, Barb. A very Happy New Year to you and all of yours, including all with four legs.

It does. Resonate. Once I started thinking about betweens, they became rather alluring … in a Krazy Kat sort of way. But then again, that may be the way I like to see the world.

    Whatever.

I like your post, and the wise questions you ask. As always.

I know that sometimes the questions are wise —- because of the wonderfully wise answers they elicit!
Like your answers, like other commenters —
A good conversation is the way I like to see the world.
Happy New Year to you and yours, Tobias!!!!

Ooohhh, I like your take on “between”. You have caused me to consider stairs in a whole new light!

  6. In between what others interpret and ours, an endless speculation and interpretation does exist. I like how you relate the stairs as to moving forward. It’s true that even in life, for us to move on, we need to leave our past, take courage and move one step forward towards the future, one day at a time.
Wishing you all the blessings in 2012. Happy New Year!!!

Traveler, it’s always good to be reminded of that insight: to go from one place to another, one stage to another, we have to be brave and leave where we are, step out, and go forward. Thanks for a timely reminder, as we leave behind 2011 and enter into 2012!
Happy New Year to you and yours —

  7. I’ve gotten so used to being between – between old life and new, old thoughts and new, old approaches and new – that I sort of don’t mind if I never get where I think I’m going. I guess it’s more like an escalator right now, and those are always fun…
