Weekly Photo Challenge: Last Chance Opportunity

Why last chance? Two reasons. For one, the weekly photo challenge switches tomorrow to another theme. More important perhaps, the fall is rapidly failing. This photo was taken only three days ago. I marveled at it then. Look at the colors! Like a showgirl in Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, it’s still here!

But since then, a New England winter has been gathering its forces.Β The temperature’s plunged almost to freezing, cold to icy rain has fallen, and snow is actually in the forecast for tomorrow night. By tomorrow morning the purple flower will be only a memory.

But it will live on here — that, too, is why we photograph.

Just look at the colors and forms in the lower petal – there’s a flower fairy hiding there in full view. Always wondered if they have underground palaces in which to ride out the inclement weather…

    Only three days ago? Wow!

Alas, impermanence is inevitable. To everything there is a season…

I think that the world has begun turning faster on its axis —
Our season is supposed to be Fall, which has scarcely arrived. Yet we are forecast to have snow tonight, even though we do not live in Minnesota!!!! πŸ˜‰ Or Colorado, where it looks like they are heading for six inches.

Beautiful colours – and that is why we photograph, so we can remember and look back on their beauty.
