Wondering —

“you have to be careful, ask yourself questions, as for example whether you still are, and if no when it stopped, and if yes how long it will still go on, anything at all to keep you from losing the thread of the dream.”

Samuel Beckett, Molloy

It seems appropriate at Yom Kippur, the most solemn day of the Jewish New Year observance, to think not only about our sins, but about our dreams. After all, which do we want to carry forward with us, sins or dreams, into a New Year?

I like the definition of sin I read recently, saying to sin meant to “miss the mark.” That sounds a lot like my former Catholic self’s notion of venial sin. One could do progressively worse from there. If one is dreaming about being the best person one can be, then I’d say by all means, carry those dreams forward.
